Classical Music and its Cultural Path

  • Monteverdi Music School 46 Barre Street Montpelier, VT, 05602 United States (map)

The countries and cultures of Italy and Germany dominated the development of Classical music (mid-18th century until roughly 1820), but starting in the mid-19th century, composers from less musically influential areas began to bring their cultural contexts to bear on this music. Eventually reaching the Americas, this trend led to a wider variety in the Classical repertoire we know today. In this Deep Dive, we'll hear from Michael Sitton, former dean of Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, professional pianist, composer, and teacher, as he explores this topic and incorporates musical examples found in Classical piano repertoire. Hosted at Monteverdi Music School with a lovely Hardman grand piano.
