David Ruffin
David studied Voice and Drama at Northwestern University. Afterwards, in New York City, he continued working with some of the most sought-after voice instructors and coaches while pursuing a career in Broadway musical theater (including highlights like the Broadway National Tour of Grease as Kenickie, his dream role of Tony in West Side Story in the Broadway European Tour, and the original play West Moon Street, Off Broadway). After several years in show business, David left New York to attend Harvard Divinity School and pursue a career in ministry. He then stepped away from full time ministry in 2017, but still works part-time with the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Burlington as the Director of Youth and Creative Arts Ministries.
While living in Vermont, since 2017, David has been able to make more space for his love of music and voice. This priority then took on greater clarity during the Covid crisis. With the support of a new voice teacher, training in the Roy Hart vocal technique, David rediscovered voice as a homebase not only for his joy but of his vocational call.
In 2022, David began offering vocal instruction, work to which he can bring the whole of his life and professional experience. His recent training in Roy Hart is particularly influential in his approach. Centered in connecting the voice with the body, this technique is rooted in the belief that, through the voice, we can open compelling doorways of truth in our artistry as in our life.
Whether you identify as a performer, yourself, or are drawn to your relationship with your voice for other reasons, David would love to support you in a path of creative and personal fulfillment.
